Team NetBeans has updated the NetBeans roadmap. They renamed the next release from NetBeans 6.10 to NetBeans 7.

“We do not expect this to be a major surprise,” according to the announcement. “The change allows the NetBeans IDE versioning to be more clearly aligned with the Java platform, reflecting Oracle’s strategy as outlined in Oracle EVP Thomas Kurian’s keynote speech at the recent JavaOne 2010 conference.”

Two main releases are planned for 2011. In March, NetBeans 7 is expected to drop with support for JDK 7 language features and JDK 7 Beta.

In the Fall, NetBeans 7.1 is scheduled to focus on support for Client Java and JavaFX Java APIs.
