According to Google, 23 percent of Android users run the latest version of the mobile operating system, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The most popular version of Android remains Android 2.3 Gingerbread with 39.8 percent of users, followed by Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich at 29.3 percent.
Those figures are quite a bit different from last month, when, for example, Jelly Bean had only 14.9 percent of Android devices. The change results from Google adopting a new method of calculating users. Instead of counting check-ins on its servers, Google now counts visits to Google Play.
“We believe the new data more accurately reflects those users who are most engaged in the Android and Google Play ecosystem,” Google explained. “This information may help [Android developers] prioritize efforts for supporting different devices.”
