The Mono Project has released version 3.0 of its open source .NET development framework, the first such update in 18 months. The biggest news from the release is the inclusion of a C# 5.0 compiler supporting asynchronous programming. That’s in line with changes Microsoft has made to the .NET framework in order to provide more support for asynchronous programming in Windows 8.
Other updates in Mono 3.0 include an improved garbage collector, a C# interactive shell, runtime optimizations, class library improvements and the inclusion of F# 3.0 in the OS X version of the application development tool. It also includes for the first time ASP.NET WebStack assemblies, such as the Entity Framework, ASP.NET MVC 4, ASP.NET WebPages, the Razor view engine and the System.Json assembly.
