Adobe recently made headlines by switching to a cloud-only distribution model for its software. However, Microsoft says it won’t be following in Adobe’s footsteps—at least for a while.
Microsoft’s Clint Patterson blogged that the company believes cloud computing will be the norm in the future. “However, unlike Adobe, we think people’s shift from packaged software to subscription services will take time,” he wrote.
He said the transition could occur “within a decade.” He added, “In the meantime, we are committed to offering choice–premier software sold as a package and powerful services sold as a subscription.”
