At the JSConf event over the weekend, Microsoft announced plans to open source Chakra, the JavaScript engine for its Edge and Internet Explorer browsers. The open source version will be called ChakraCore, and it will be slightly different that the version of Chakra used by Edge and Internet Explorer because it won’t contain the pieces that connect the JavaScript engine to the HTML engine and the Universal Windows Platform.
Microsoft says it will welcome community contributions to the project. It will also be working on making Chakra cross-platform although it will only run on Windows at first.
