Microsoft has updated .NET Core, its open source, cross-platform development platform. The 2.1 version of .NET Core features performance improvements, the new SocketsHttpHandler event handler, a new process for installing tools, the new memory-efficient Span type, new cryptography APIs and support for Brotli Compression. This is a minor release, the next major update, .NET Core 3, is scheduled to arrive in 2019.

At the same time, the company unveiled ASP.NET Core 2.1, its open source Web development framework. Improvements include the SignalR library and HTTPS enabled by default.
