Microsoft has unveiled two new sets of developer tools for its Cortana virtual assistant. The Cortana Devices SDK will allow hardware makers to incorporate Cortana into Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and the Cortana Skills Kit will enable software makers to add services to Cortana. Several companies, including Knowmail, Capital One, Expedia and TalkLocal, have already built services using the Cortana Skills Kit.

“We’re at the beginning of a technological revolution in artificial intelligence,” Microsoft said. “The personal digital assistant is the interface where all the powers of that intelligence can become an extension of each one of us. Delivering on this promise will take a community that is equally invested in the outcome and able to share in the benefits.”

According to Microsoft 145 million people use Cortana.
