Some of the biggest technology companies in the world, including Amazon, Cisco, Google, Intel, Microsoft, Mozilla and Netflix, have formed a new group called the Alliance for Open Media. Their goal is to create a new open source video format for the Web. More specifically, it will be ideal for delivering streaming video to low-powered devices, and it will support copy protection. They plan to release the standard under the Apache License 2.0.
Conspicuously, the new alliance does not include Apple or Facebook. Without those two heavyweights on board, some industry analysts are questioning how effective the group will be at getting widespread adoption of the new standard.
