On the first day of its Build developer conference, Microsoft made a long list of product announcements. For developers the most significant was probably the introduction of Universal Windows Apps. The technology allows developers to use the Windows Runtime to write an app once that will run on Windows-based PCs, tablets and Windows Phone devices. “That’s completely opening up a huge base of users for your application,” promised Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
Microsoft is including Universal Windows App templates in Visual Studio 2013 Update 2, which has a release candidate available for download.
“You want to build for Windows because we are going to innovate with a challenger mindset,” added Nadella. “Microsoft isn’t just an incumbent market leader touting its next version of Windows. It’s innovating in hardware and software to go after the market opportunity.”
