For many months, Microsoft has been encouraging developers to build “Metro” apps that will run on the new tile-based interface in Windows 8. Now, however, the company says it is dropping the “Metro” name and will be using the term “Windows 8 style.”

Microsoft is claiming that “Metro” was always just a code name that it intended to drop eventually. However, some reports claim that Microsoft dropped the name because of threatened lawsuits from a European retailer that uses the “Metro” name.
