Wednesday at its Windows 10 event, Microsoft surprises attendees with a new augmented reality technology that superimposes virtual images on the real world. The software architecture that makes the display possible is called Windows Holographic, and it works with a head-mounted wearable device known as HoloLens. APIs for developers who want to build apps to work with the technology will be built in to Windows 10.

Other noteworthy revelations from the event included the following:

  • Windows 10 upgrades will be free for the first year.
  • The Cortana voice assistant will be incorporated in the OS.
  • Windows 10 will include a new browser codenamed Spartan.
  • There will be more integration between Windows 10 and Xbox.
  • Microsoft will offer Surface Hub, an all-in-one with an 84-inch that functions like a virtual whiteboard.
