Microsoft violated the open source GNU General Public License. The Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool includes open source code and Microsoft packaged and sold the software under a closed source license.
Last week, Microsoft admitted their mistake and said they would re-release the download tool as an open source download by the end of the week.
That didn’t happen.
Last Friday, Microsoft’s Open Source Community Manager Peter Galli said that they will need a few more weeks to finish making the code GPL compliant. That sounds like a major rewrite.
The Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool not only allows users to download Windows 7, but also to burn .iso files to a USB flash or DVD drive. It has been removed from the online Microsoft Store.
