Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing service has unveiled Azure Container Instances (ACI), a lightweight alternative to its Azure Container Service (ACS). Intended for small workloads, ACI runs individual containers and bills by the second. It supports Kubernetes as an optional orchestration tool, but orchestration is not required.
Currently ACI is available as a technology preview, and it supports only Linux, not Windows. However, Microsoft has said that it plans to add Windows support soon.
