Apple’s iOS has long been known as the more secure mobile development platform because the company vets all apps before listing them on the App Store. But the company recently removed multiple apps from the store because they contained malware. The problem occurred because some Chinese developers mistakenly used counterfeit versions of Xcode development tools that contained malicious code. Affected apps included Didi Kuaidi (a taxi-calling app), Citic Industrial Bank, China Southern Airlines and the music service of NetEase (a Chinese Web portal).
According to The New York Times, this is only the sixth time malware has been detected in the App Store.
Apple encourages mobile development firms to be sure that they are downloading the original Xcode tools in order to avoid these sorts of incidents in the future.
