Most web developers say that tweaking CSS to maximize performance usually requires far more effort than it is worth. However, engineers at LinkedIn have discovered that CSS optimization can yield substantial benefit when you are dealing with a website the size of LinkedIn.
The business social network has released alpha versions of two new CSS optimization tools on GitHub. The first is CSS Blocks, “an ergonomic, component-oriented CSS authoring system that produces high-performance stylesheets.” The second is OptiCSS, “a general-purpose CSS optimization library.” The company said the tools need much more work before they are ready for production use, but it is asking other developers for their help in getting to a 1.0 release.
