According Joab Jackson of IDG News, after three years of development, Joomla version 1.6 is expected to land today.
This new release is slated to feature improvements in access control and page layout, Jackson said.
“Most notably, a new access control system has been implemented,” Jackson reported. “The new version gives administrators a lot more nuanced control over how users can view and manage content.”
In terms of layout, prior to this release Joomla relied heavily on the use of outdated HTML tables. Version 1.6 has moved to XHTML.
