The Eclipse Foundation has announced that the technology formerly known as Java Enterprise Edition (Java EE) will now be called Jakarta EE. The new name was one of two finalists that were put up for a vote among Java community members. The other option, Enterprise Profile, received only 35.6 percent of the vote. The vote was necessary because Oracle is no longer maintaining the project but owns the copyright on the Java EE name.

While the community has been deciding on a new name, the project has been known as EE4J, but Eclipse Foundation executive director Mike Milinkovich issued a call for people to stop using that name. “As of today,” he wrote, “it is preferred that when you are generically referring to this open source software platform that you call it Jakarta EE rather than EE4J. EE4J, the Eclipse Top-level project, is the only name we’ve had for a couple of months, but as we at least tried to make clear, that was never intended to be the brand name.”
