Members of the Java community have given modular Java their blessing after earlier shooting down the proposed changes. Back in May, the Java Community Process Executive Committee voted 13 to 10 against Java Specification Request 376, a proposal to make the open source programming language more modular. Organizations like IBM, Red Hat, Twitter and the Eclipse Foundation all voted no because of concerns about the plan.
Now after additional work on Java’s modularity system, the committee voted 24 to 0 in favor of the proposal. While most of the original no votes are now in favor of the modularity project, Red Hat said that it still had concerns and abstained from the most recent vote.
Java Development Kit 9, including the new modularity features, is now slated for release September 21.
