Mononucleosis is a disease, but is the open source adaption of Microsoft’s .Net technology Linux one?
Last week, blogger Shane Shields (aka Locutus) said that absolutely Mono is a disease infecting Linux and it should be eradicated.
“Mono and moonlight do not bring in extra functionality which is vital to enhance the Linux operating system. It adds extra dependencies, wastes resources and has a hidden agenda which many cannot and do not perceive.
In short, I think that mono is a disease which infects Linux distributions and is not much different than its biological viral namesake,” Locutus wrote.
But Matthew Casperson disagrees completely. He said that Shields is nothing more than a Linux fan-boy with an irrational hatred of Microsoft. Casperson said that at the end of the day no one really cares what language they use, just as long as it works.
His appeal for practicality was also made on the grounds that there are lots of jobs for C# programmers and so there.
However, setting the jobs issue aside, in all likelihood most programmers, maybe not Microsoft ones, actually do care what language they’re coding with.
