Citing “people familiar with the matter,” The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google plans to fold Chrome OS into Android and to unveil the combined operating system in 2017. It added that Google has been working on the project for about two years. Android is the world’s most popular mobile operating system, but Chrome is installed on less than 3 percent of the world’s PCs.

However, after the news broke, Hiroshi Lockheimer, Google’s senior vice president of Android, Chrome OS, and Chromecast, seemed to suggest that it wasn’t true. He tweeted, “There’s a ton of momentum for Chromebooks and we are very committed to Chrome OS. I just bought two for my kids for schoolwork!”
