Analyst Horace Dediu is pointing out that iOS apps generated more revenue than U.S. showings of Holllywood movies in 2014. According to Apple, its developers earned $10 billion last year. Because Apple takes a 30 percent cut, that brings the total revenue generated by the App Store to $14.3 billion. By comparison, Hollywood movies generated about $10 billion at U.S. theaters.
Of course, that doesn’t mean every developer is rolling in cash. Separate reports indicate that half of iOS apps and more than half of Android apps generate less than $500 per month.
