In-App Purchasing Hits Record High

According to a new report from Distimo, the revenue mobile developers receive from in-app purchases has hit an all-time high. In the U.S., 76 percent of iPhone revenues now come from in-app purchases, an increase from 53 percent in January of 2012. In Asian countries, that percentage is even higher—more than 90 percent in Hong Kong, Japan, China and South Korea.

The report also found that the mobile development industry is moving toward a “freemium” model, with 71 percent of iOS apps now available for free but offering paid in-app purchases. Notably, all of the top-grossing apps identified by the report use the freemium model.
