As promised, HP unveiled beta open source versions of its webOS mobile operating system on August 31. The release actually includes two separate builds–a desktop version and an OpenEmbedded version. The company invited outside developers to participate in the process of improving the OS, saying, “As we work with the community to deliver innovation to the webOS platform, we will highlight and promote the most innovative and noteworthy contributions. Let us know of your breakthroughs and where you might need help. We have the specialists to assist.”
Leaked HP memos indicate that the company is also working on commercializing webOS through a new company known as “Gram.”
