How to Become a Developer When the Only Technology You Own Is a Feature Phone

Over the weekend, CNN shared the rags-to-riches story of a 19-year-old developer from Nigeria. Elvis Chidera used to live in a very rural part of the country, and the only technology he had at his disposal was a Nokia 2690 feature phone. Still, as an 11-year-old, he began teaching himself programming on the phone, and he began creating his first apps.

By the time he was 14, he was taking freelance web development jobs in order to earn enough money to buy a laptop. He switched his attention to mobile development — specifically Android. Today, he is a living in Lagos, the biggest city in Nigeria, and he has a job as an Android developer for an MIT-backed startup called dot Learn.
