When it comes to big data processing, Apache’s Hadoop has few legitimate competitors — but that could be changing. LexisNexis has announced that it will open source HPCC Systems, the set of data processing tools it developed in-house for its Risk Solutions division.
According to LexisNexis, HPCC outperforms Hadoop and handles some workloads that Hadoop can’t. It uses Enterprise Control Language (ECL) for writing parallel processing workloads, which the company says is simpler to use than Hadoop’s MapReduce. And HPCC is written in C++, which makes it faster than Java-based Hadoop.
