Developers will soon have access to Google Assistant, the new voice assistant in Android that is getting largely positive reviews. The company plans to release an SDK for Assistant in December. Hardware developers will be able to embed Assistant in third-party devices. In addition, developers will have access to two features that will allow other apps and devices to interact with Assistant: Direct Actions will enable simple commands for connecting Assistant to other products and services, and Conversation Actions will enable more complex interactions, such as allowing users to check their bank account balances.
With the SDK, Assistant is likely to become not just a competitor for Apple’s Siri and Microsoft’s Cortana, but also for Amazon’s Alexa and other smart home controllers.
