Google Releases Collide Web-Based IDE

Google has released the source code for Collide, an open source, Web-based integrated development environment (IDE). “What we pushed out is extremely stripped down right now, but the most interesting tech stuff around collaborative editing is all there,” blogged Google’s Scott Blum. “Long term, we hope it will serve as a catalyst for improving the state of Web-based IDEs.”

Web-based IDEs appeal to many developers because of the ability to deploy code directly to a cloud computing service and because of the collaboration capabilities.

Observers wonder if the release of Collide signifies that Google’s Brightly project, another attempt to develop a Web-based IDE, has been halted. Google declined to comment on the speculation.
