The next version of Android, Android L, will offer support for 64-bit devices. In preparation for its likely release later this month, Google has released an x86 64-bit Android L developer preview emulator image. “With the release of the x86 64-bit emulator, you can start testing your 64-bit apps today,” the company announced.

Google says that the benefits of 64-bit apps include increased addressable memory space, a larger number of registers and new instruction sets.

HTC has already announced two 64-bit Android smartphones, the Desire 510 and 820.
