Google has made a change to its iOS app and the iOS version of Chrome that could have a positive impact on the mobile development industry. Google’s search function has begun indexing iOS apps and can now link directly to content in apps. For example, if a user has the OpenTable app installed on his or her phone and searches for dinner reservations, Google will display a link to OpenTable in the list of search results. When tapped, the link will open the OpenTable app.
The new capability will be rolling out to iOS users beginning today. Google already offered a similar feature for Android apps.
During the I/O conference that starts Thursday, Google will offer some tips for developers who want to make sure that Google is indexing their apps.
