Google has announced that it will not be integrating its Dart programming language into the Chrome browser. That move is significant because Google originally positioned Dart as an alternative to JavaScript that all browsers would support. If Google isn’t even including the language in its own browser, it seems highly unlikely that any other browsers would do so.

Still, Google insists that it isn’t giving up on Dart. “We are committed to building our next-generation web apps with Dart, and a renewed focus on generating optimal JavaScript helps us deliver great apps to everyone with a modern browser,” said Google’s Scott Silver. “Dart has significantly improved our engineers’ productivity and our ability to quickly launch and iterate.”

Industry watchers have also noted that Dart’s advances have influenced the development of JavaScript.
