In response to customer requests, Google recently added three key enhancements to its Cloud Spanner relational database service: query inspection improvements, new region availability, and new multi-region configurations.

Cloud Spanner product manager Deepti Srivastava wrote in a blog post that one of his team’s guiding principles when adding features is to ensure that customers have a familiar user experience compared to traditional relational databases.

“With that in mind, we’re excited to announce the addition of the query statistics feature, which provides the capability to view, inspect, and debug the most common and most resource-consuming Cloud Spanner SQL queries that are executed on a database,” Srivastava wrote.

“This new Cloud Spanner introspection capability gives users better visibility into frequent and expensive queries running on the system,” Srivastava added. “The information is useful both during schema and query design, as well as for production debugging – users can see which queries need to be optimized to improve performance and resource consumption.”

Cloud Spanner is also now available in Hong Kong as part of the GCP region launch, along with the addition of Cloud Spanner availability in seven other GCP regions this year, bringing the total region availability to 14 out of 18 GCP regions. New regions added this year include South Carolina, Singapore, Netherlands, Montreal, Mumbai, Northern Virginia and Los Angeles.

Finally, the new nam6 multi-region configuration provides multi-region coverage within the United States to reduce latency and enhance durability across the coasts and in the middle of the country. The other new multi-region configuration, eur3, provides multi-region coverage within the European Union to increase availability and performance for applications based in the EU that serve a predominantly EU customer base.
