GitHub has released the results of a survey of 5,500 randomly selected developers who use its code repository services. Many people have pointed out the scarcity of women involved in open source, and the survey called attention to the extent of the problem. The sample of users was 95 percent male, 3 percent female and 1 percent non-binary.

Other key findings included the following:

  • 93 percent of open source developers struggle with incomplete or confusing project documentation.
  • 60 percent of developers rarely or never contribute to documentation.
  • Half of developers have seen bad behavior such as rudeness, name calling and stereotyping.
  • 25 percent of women reported language that made them feel unwelcome in the open source community, and 6 percent of women say they have received unwanted sexual advances.
