According to a new Gartner report, 2013 was a very good year for application infrastructure and middleware software vendors, with worldwide revenues increasing 5.6 percent. IBM was the number one vendor with 30 percent of the market, a 1.6 percent increase from 2012. Oracle came in second with 15.3 percent of the market, a 0.4 percent increase.

The research firm said that trends like cloud computing and the internet of things are both transforming application infrastructure and making it more important. “Application infrastructure and middleware projects are becoming the cornerstone of the digital business,” said Fabrizio Biscotti, research director at Gartner. “While spending in traditional AIM products continues and remains sizeable, we are seeing a growing interest toward newer offerings, such as PaaS, low-latency messaging, complex event processing and in-memory data grids. These technologies are essential to developing a digital business strategy, for example, connecting digital marketing and channels, or empowering staff with social networks.”
