Mozilla and Microsoft have been at war for awhile, but now Mozilla has a new ally in the French military.

On Nov. 6, 2007, the French government issued a directive telling state agencies to “Seek maximum technological and commercial independence.”

Well DailyTech’s Jason Mick blogged today that the French military have been working with the Mozilla to get rid of Outlook in favor of Thunderbird.

“Frustrated that Microsoft’s proprietary client did not allow open, easy to implement extensions, the military decided to give Outlook the boot and turned to Mozilla’s client to create extensions to improve security and bookkeeping,” Mick reported.

The result is an email client that is much more secure. It’s called “TrustedBird.”

But it’s not just the French military that’s getting rid of Microsoft Outlook. TrustedBird is in operation at French Finance, Interior and Culture, and according to Mick, the email client is installed on 80,000 computers.

“We started with a military project, but quickly generalized it,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Frederic Suel of the Ministry of Defense.

The French are also considering replacing Windows servers with Samba, Firefox instead of Internet Explorer and Open Office to replace Microsoft Office.
