Facebook Wants Devs to Build ‘Lifestyle’ Apps

In the past, one type of app has dominated Facebook’s platform–games. But the company wants to change that.

Facebook says it is now working closely with developers who make “lifestyle” apps–apps related to fitness, reading books, sharing your favorite movies and other personal interests. At the SxSW conference, Facebook’s Sam Lessin explained this new focus by saying, “We can’t succeed — and we’re really not an interesting product — without a strong developer community around us.”

And attention from Facebook can be very good for developers. For example, following Facebook’s promotion of its social reading app, Goodreads saw its user base grow from 6.5 million users to upward of 15 million.
