Facebook Buys Oculus for $2 Billion

Facebook has announced that it will buy Oculus VR Inc. for $2 billion. Oculus is best known as the maker of the Rift headset, a wearable virtual reality device that looks like ski goggles.

“Mobile is the platform of today, and now we’re also getting ready for the platforms of tomorrow,” said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. “Oculus has the chance to create the most social platform ever and change the way we work, play and communicate.”

It’s unclear how the Facebook acquisition will affect developers. Oculus says that more than 75,000 developers have ordered SDKs for the Rift. However, some prominent programmers, including Minecraft developer Markus “Notch” Persson, say the Facebook ownership makes them less interested in creating games and applications for the device.
