John Perry Barlow had an amazingly wide-ranging resume. Among many other things, he was a rancher, a lyricist for the grateful dead, a poet and a political activist. But within the technology industry, he is best known as one of the cofounders of the Electronic Freedom Foundation (EFF) and a former writer for Wired magazine. Current EFF executive director Cindy Cohn wrote, “It is no exaggeration to say that major parts of the Internet we all know and love today exist and thrive because of Barlow’s vision and leadership. He always saw the Internet as a fundamental place of freedom, where voices long silenced can find an audience and people can connect with others regardless of physical distance.”

He died Wednesday at the age of 70.

According to Cohn, Barlow recently completely his memoir Mother American Night, which is scheduled for release in June of this year. In the meantime, if you’d like to read some of the Cohn’s other writing that expresses his personal philosophy, you can check out his Principles of Adult Behavior on GitHub.
