The Eclipse Foundation, known for its open source Java IDE, wants to play a role in developing the standards for the Internet of Things (IoT). “Our goal at Eclipse is to be the open source community that provides the basics technology building blocks for the Internet of Things,” said Ian Skerrett, vice president of marketing and ecosystem at the Eclipse Foundation. “We believe for the Internet of Things to be successful it needs to be based on open standards and open source. The current state of the IoT industry is a lot of proprietary vendors attempting to lock customers into their own solutions and protocols.”
Since November of 2012, the foundation has had an Eclipse M2M Working Group tasked with developing machine-to-machine technology. During 2013, the group launched thirteen different projects. “In 2014 expect the user and adopter community for these projects to engage. IoT is hot so I expect a lot more users to join and interact with the community,” Skerrett added. “I am not going to say 2014 will be the year of IoT, but there is definitely a lot of momentum and interest in IoT.”
