At eBay’s developer conference, the company introduced X.commerce, a new group of technologies designed to help developers create retail applications. The tools will help develop apps aimed at strengthening companies’ online, mobile and social networking presence. The X.commerce platform builds on tools offered through PayPal and other companies recently acquired by eBay, including Milo, Red Laser and Magento.
This move into back-end technology by eBay is sharply different than the strategy of the other major online retailer, Amazon.com, which is turning its attention to digital media distribution and mobile hardware.
