For developers, the arrival of the new iPad may bring the opportunity for more sales, but in the short term it means more work. Only a few developers have optimized their iPad apps for the new tablet’s 2048 x 1536 retina display, but many are working on it.
As Apple CEO Tim Cook points out, the new iPad has 1 million more pixels than an HDTV. In order to take advantage of all those pixels, developers need to update their apps with higher-resolution graphics, animations and video, or they risk turning off customers with apps that look grainy on the retina display. Jonathan George, CEO of Boxcar, which makes apps for the iPhone and iPad, believes “Eventually, every app will need to be retina compatible.” He adds, “When we transitioned from the iPhone 3G to the iPhone 4, users complained about how “ugly” the apps were until each app transitioned.”
Once developers do get their apps optimized, they’ll have to wait on the App Store’s approval process to push the upgrades out to their users, a process that often takes days or weeks.
