Recruiting firm HackerRank says that, because of the continuing developer shortage, many employers are willing to consider candidates without a four-year computer science degree. Even large, well-known companies like JP Morgan Chase and VMware are looking at candidates with training from coding bootcamps or junior colleges or self-taught developers who have used online resources to acquire their skills.
“It’s more important than ever to realize that CS (computer science) degrees are not the only way to become a great developer,” said Vivek Ravisankar, HackerRank co-founder and CEO. “That said, training is only one part of the equation. If companies don’t find new ways to find and evaluate candidates based on skill, versus pedigree, then they’ll continue to face a skills shortage.”
