Today, Debian announced that Debian 6.0 “Squeeze” will be released with a completely free Linux kernel.

“We are proud to announce that, to the best of our knowledge, all issues are solved and that we will be able to deliver a Linux kernel which is completely Free, according to the Debian Free Software Guidelines,” the press release said.

Debian has been working towards a truly free Linux kernel since Debian 4.0 “Etch,” but now they think they’ve finally achieved their goal.

For Debian users that require the non-free kernel components, they will still be available in the non-free repositories, but they won’t be supported by Debian.
