U.S. Reps. Henry Waxman (D-CA) and Fred Upton (R-MI) have sent letters to 34 iOS developers who sell social apps in order to find out more about their data collection practices. The Congressmen say their goal is to “better understand what, if any, information these particular apps gather, what they do with it, and what notice they provide to app users.”

Although the developers who received the letters haven’t necessarily been accused of any wrongdoing, several other app makers have recently admitted to copying users’ contact lists and/or photos.

The developers have until April 12 to respond.
