In its annual Visual Networking Index report, Cisco predicts a sharp uptick in mobile data, in part due to the volume of wearable devices it expects to be in use in coming years. While there were just 109 million of these devices around last year, the company expects that number to rise to more than 500 million by 2019. All those new wearables will be generating a lot more mobile data—18 times more if Cisco’s forecasts are correct.
The report also predicts increases in smartphone use and Internet of Things devices. All together these trends may generate 634.4 petabytes of mobile data traffic per month, an increase from 74.2 petabytes per month last year.
