Google has added a new technology called “Native Client” to its beta release of Chrome 14. Native Client allows the browser to run C or C++ code. As a result, developers will be able to tap into desktop libraries to create faster, better Web apps.

Native Client is built on open source tools, so other browsers could incorporate it. If they did, it might open the door to a new generation of Web apps that perform as well as desktop apps.
