Canonical Drops Smartphones, Unity Desktop

Canonical, best known as the company that develops Ubuntu Linux, is making some changes to its strategy. The open source giant will stop working on smartphones and redouble its efforts to promote Ubuntu for the Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing. In addition, it will stop developing its Unity8 desktop environment and instead use the GNOME desktop for desktop Ubuntu.

“The choice, ultimately, is to invest in the areas which are contributing to the growth of the company,” said Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth. “Those are Ubuntu itself, for desktops, servers and VMs, our cloud infrastructure products (OpenStack and Kubernetes) our cloud operations capabilities (MAAS, LXD, Juju, BootStack), and our IoT story in snaps and Ubuntu Core.”
