C has taken over as the leader on Tiobe’s Programming Community Index, not because C experienced a sudden surge in popularity but because Java continued its slow decline. “It took some time, but Java’s long-term downward trend line finally crosses C’s stable (almost flat) popularity line,” noted Tiobe. “Although it is expected that Java will not decline much further due to the popularity of the Android platform, C is able to remain No. 1 for at least another couple of months. This can be concluded by looking at the extrapolation of moving averages for both languages.”
The rest of the top ten on the list include C++, Objective-C, C#, Visual Basic, Python, JavaScript and Perl, in that order. Three new languages clawed their way into the top 20 this month: PL/SQL (12th), Visual Basic .NET (14th) and NXT-G, which is a language for programming Lego Mindstorms, (20th).
