Building Metro Apps for ARM Will Be Just Like Building for x86

With a new blog post, Microsoft is attempting to reassure developers that they’ll have no problems building apps for Windows RT, the version of Windows 8 that will run on devices with ARM processors. “What you’ll find is that developing an app for Windows on ARM is the same as developing a Metro-style app for x86/64 PCs; that is, the same Metro-style app will run on either hardware,” wrote Microsoft’s Jason Zander. “Also, many Visual Studio paradigms you’ve come to know from building other application types (designing, testing, debugging, etc.) will carry over to your experience of building Metro-style apps.”

However, Zander later admitted that ARM developers will face a few challenges. Because Visual Studio only runs on x86 PCs, developers will need to do their debugging remotely through Remote Tools for Visual Studio running on an ARM device. ARM app developers will also need to buy a separate license.
