Cloud file-sharing service Box has announced that it has purchased Crocodoc, a small startup focused on HTML5 capabilities. Many app developers rely on Crocodocs services, which transform Office or PDF documents into HTML5 so that they can be viewed in a browser.
“You probably haven’t heard of us directly, but you probably use apps from some of our customers,” explained Crocodoc co-founder and CEO Ryan Damico. “We’re a behind-the-scenes platform that enables various products such as LinkedIn and Blackboard to embed documents into Web and mobile apps.” Other Crocodoc customers include Facebook, Yammer and Edmodo.
“Content sits at the center of every business, and nearly every business application,” added Box co-founder and CEO Aaron Levie. “We’re extending Crocodoc’s HTML5 technology to every developer in the world who’s building an application that touches content.”
All of Crocodoc’s seven staffers will join the Box team.
