Apple has confirmed that it is creating a new unified artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) team that will oversee its work on the Siri personal assistant and the Core ML developer tools. Recent hire John Giannandrea, who came to Apple from Google, will lead the effort. The internal structure of the Core ML and Siri teams are expected to remain as they were.
Giannandrea was also previously a senior engineer at General Magic, a now-defunct tech firm responsible for innovations like software modems and small touchscreens. Other notable General Magic employees included Andy Hertzfeld, Marc Porat, Bill Atkinson, Susan Kare, Tony Fadell, Andy Rubin, Megan Smith and Kevin Lynch.
